In 2023, to preserve the character of our neighborhood and keep it beautiful, shady, and green, we worked with local partners (The Noble Tree Foundation, The Balmer Foundation & private donors) to invest in our future and plant 91 trees throughout Hampton Heights (on the right-of-way of 5 streets).
The landscape plan and tree selection have been created by horticulturist Stewart Winslow, with assistance and advice from Dr. Kevin Parris and Dr. Bruce Fraedrich.
Impacted neighbors have agreed to assist by watering the trees in the first year. The neighborhood association board committed to an annual inspection of the trees guided by tree experts, and appropriate pruning and other maintenance.
91 trees planted and 13 species including:
-
Acer Palm Bloodgood Japanese Maple
-
Acer Saccharum Flashfire Maple
-
Cornus Cherokee Princess Dogwood
-
Cornus Florida Appalachian Dogwood
-
Cornus mas saffron sentinel Dogwood

How to care for the newly planted trees?
-
Water newly planted trees as much as once per day for the first 2 weeks
-
Water once a week during the growing season
-
Young trees need up to 10 gallons of water per inch of tree diameter per week
-
If it rains, adjust as needed
-
If you are receiving a tree next to your home and will be out of town, please make arrangements with neighbors to help water! This is a team effort to keep our neighborhood green
-
The Hampton Heights Neighborhood Association is providing a watering hose per affected household as needed
In 2024, Schneider Tree Care arborists conducted a comprehensive inventory of all trees located in our right-of-way to ensure they are cataloged and preserved for future generations. A total of 185 trees were surveyed, tagged, and entered into an online map database. This database allows for easy tracking and can be searched by address, tree type, size, and condition. To maintain accuracy and relevance, the inventory will be updated every five years. The findings from this initiative will also be shared with the City of Spartanburg.
Thank you, donors.
With tremendous gratitude to the Balmer Foundation, The Noble Tree Foundation, The City of Spartanburg, Roebuck Nursery, and Hampton Heights anonymous donors. We are grateful for your help to re-green Hampton Heights!
